Title

On the death of the noble and generous hearted friend John Burchell

Description

How beautiful is age

When tending to repose,

Like a full ripened shock of corn:

It to heaven's garner goes.

Brother and friend of peace,

We seek thy shade in vain:

Yet clings thy memory to the lip,

Of penury and pain.

Thy name is on the spot,

Where thy fresh childhood grew:

By living intellect embalmed,

With ever fragrant dew.

Yet fondness lingered near,

With ever watchful mind -

And in thy bosom dwelt the germ,

Of love to all mankind.

Yes, love was with thee still,

Even till thy latest breath!

Till love divine the victory gave,

O'er the destroyer death.

The above beautiful tribute, to departed worth, meets our warmest approbation. We were well acquainted with Mr. Burchell and can give our testimony in favor of his integrity, patriotism, and benevolence. Mr. Burchell was a warm friend, and a noble generous citizen.
