To the Memory of Benjamin Lundy

Dublin Core

Title

To the Memory of Benjamin Lundy

Description

Around thee shall the prairie roll its green

And flowery billows far off in the sun,

And a deep murmur rise from that wide scene,

The solemn and low-chanted hymn of one

Whose spirit, like the sunshine beaming bright,

Poured for the mellow light and warmth o'er all

Whose souls oppression mantled in her night,

And fettered in her heavy iron thrall.

Thy memory sweet, shall like a golden chain,

Still bind us to each other, and shall be

A talisman, to turn our hearts again

To the down trodden - weary should we be;

And in dark coming years; - as at the night
A glowing star, grows brighter and more bright.

The following sonnet, written in praise of a well loved philanthropist, was presented to me by my intelligent and esteemed friend, S.M.D., of Philadelphia. Thinking, as she does, that it may be acceptable to your readers, I send it you for your "Poet's Corner." It is the production of Howard W. Gilbert. Respectfully, C.L.R.
