Title
"Columbia's Eagle slaps her wings"
Description
COLUMBIA'S Eagle claps her wings,
The stripes, the chains of Afric's sons
Look! see them crouch with slavish fear
What tho' their brow be darkly stained,
Their trampled rights for vengeance call,
West Bloomfield, N.Y. 1839.
Our banner proudly waves;
Still southern breezes onward bear,The shrieks of fettered slaves.
The stripes, the chains of Afric's sons
Have writ a fearful doom;
Hark! even now they chant the dirge,O'er buried Freedom's tomb.
Look! see them crouch with slavish fear
And wait the proud behest -
Like Sparton Helot tamely bow,To tyrants of the West.
What tho' their brow be darkly stained,
In crisping curls their hair;
The image of one common GodOur injured brethren bear,
Their trampled rights for vengeance call,
Justice will wake ere long;
Jehovah'll bare his own right arm,In wrath redress their wrong.
West Bloomfield, N.Y. 1839.
