Psalm XXIX
Dublin Core
Title
Psalm XXIX
Description
Give Jehovah, give ye to him
Lo! his voice the cedars breaketh,
On the storm Jehovah rideth,
Strength and glory, sons of light!
Give the Lord the glory due him,Give him majesty and might.
Bow before him!
Lo! he comes in splendor bright.
'Tis Jehovah's voice on high;
See! the angry cloud he sunders,Bursting clouds, how swift they fly!
How tremendous!
How he shakes and rends the sky!
Lo! his voice the cedars breaketh,
Mighty cedars low are laid;
See! the lofty mountain shaketh,Hills are leaping sore afraid;
Forked lightnings
Flash across the deep'ning shade.
Deserts at his voice are shaken,Forests felled, the earth laid bare,
Frighted hinds with pangs are taken,Consternation fills the air.
O, what grandeur!
Heaven and earth his might declare.
On the storm Jehovah rideth,
Yea, he sits forever King;
From the tempest's rage he hidethAll his saints beneath his wing.
Peace and safety
Zion's God will ever bring.

From the New York Evangelist: Composed on the occasion of a most tremendous thunder-storm - the approach, progress, and effects of which are described by the Hebrew poet, with a sublimity and magnificence scarcely to be found in any other writer, ancient or modern. The passing over of the storm - the safety with which the people of God are kept in the wildest commotion of the elements, are beautifully portrayed in the close of the poem.
