Vermont
Description
Vermont, in presenting these noble resolutions with an American Congress in the face of so much plagued malice and cruelty, appeared like an angel of mercy walking upon the high places of the earth. Who might not on that day have covered the honor of a birthplace in your state? - ALVAN STEWART.
My native State, well done!
No slave has turned thy sod
Unwet with tears and blood
Strong on thy hills side stand
Free as thy mountain streams
Where leagued oppression reigns
Amid oppression's storm,
Dark slavery quails to meet
Raise that free voice again,
My native State, well done!
Aye, proud of thee,
Proud to be called thy son,Land of the free!
No slave has turned thy sod
For others pride;
No bondman ever trodThy mountain side.
Unwet with tears and blood
By slavery wrung,
Sternly has Justice stoodThy hills among.
Strong on thy hills side stand
Freedom and laws;
Earth has me nobler band,No holier cause.
Free as thy mountain streams
Or eagle's flight
Brightly thy spirit gleamsFor God and right.
Where leagued oppression reigns
And bondmen groan,
Breathe Freedom's stirring at rainsTHY TRUMPET TONE!
Amid oppression's storm,
And error's night,
Beams forth thy radiant form,Angel of light!
Dark slavery quails to meet
Thy lightening eye,
Flashing whence bold hearts beatFor liberty.
Raise that free voice again,
By tyrant's feared,
Despite oppression's reign,IT SHALL BE HEARD!
