Love and the Rose

Title

Love and the Rose

Description

Did'st thou see, Love this dawning

Sweet rose?

I've wandered O, so far,

Sweet rose;

Yes, wandered since the morning
First stole her speech from night
And gave the world forewarning
Of loss of sleep and star;
And, yet, Iv'e caught no sight
Of Love's soft dreaming light,

Sweet rose.

I wonder where he's hiding,

Sweet rose;

I wish that you could tell,

Sweet rose.

'Twould keep my heart from chiding
And bring hope-scented sleep,
With rest and peace confiding
In joy's bewildering spell;
If Love I find I'll keep
Him in my heart and weep,

Sweet rose.

I've found him here reclining,

Sweet rose;

Beneath thy petals shy,

Sweet rose;

The rogue, and I repining,
With heart most broke and sore,
While he with eyes bright shining
Right here with thee did lie.
I ne'er by him before
Believed I'd set such store,

Sweet rose.
